Rivers and seas are able to rule over the hundred valleys because they are good at being below things, and as a result they become ruler of the hundred valleys.

This is why one who desires to be above people must speak below them, and one who desires to be ahead of people must follow them.

It is why a wise person dwells above without weighing down the people, and why they dwell in front without obstructing the people.

Because the world happily supports but never tires of them.

And because they do not compete, nothing in the world can compete with them.
