About the following compilation
The Tao Te Ching was first translated into English by John Chalmers, a Scottish missionary, in 1868. His, and several other early translations, are included here.
Each link contains three translations of every Tao Te Ching chapter, a short takeaway by Tree Buffalo, and longer commentaries where needed. Chapter headings on this page are Tree Buffalo creations.
Substitutions of gender-neutral nouns, pronouns, and accompanying grammar are contained [in brackets].
